Call Me Loretta / Nuit Noire Split 7”

Split

What’s that mother, more vinyl ? Has santa been ? It’s red vinyl this time, a double helping of Gallic pop music. Call Me Loretta head down the lofi indie autoroute, coming out a bit Dinosaur Jr and with a bit of See See Rider chucked in for very good measure. I also sense some Pavementy thoughts and some Velvet (underground + nico) mornings. Tres bien.
Nuit Noire’s fans apparently think they’re Black Metal. I think they’re punk/speedcore, which would suggest 1 of us is wrong. It’s not Black Metal, it’s too scratchy and fast and not enough laden with the doom of the world. Is it any cop ? The recording is rough, but, yes. Ear syringingly so.

A good old-fashioned split single in pretty red vinyl. Ah. Warms the heart. Call Me Loretta's two tracks are sensitive indie with pretty distorted guitars and a nice line in introspection. "Each Dawn I Die" sounds like Sonic Youth's quieter moments and "Smart Heart" is a shivery Velvets-inspired track. The vocal has that blank Lou Reed-ness and the melody is sweet.
Buckle up for Nuit Noire's chaotic noise on the flip. It's black metal apparently. They speed through two songs ("In The Very Old Forest" and "Moonbath") and it's obvious they're good at what they do. It's just not my kind of thing. I much prefer Call me Loretta's music. Still, a very nice record in its own way.
